Emma Stone is Academy Award winner (R) ‘La La Land’ stars in Disney’s ‘Cruella,’ an all-new live-action film about the rebel from the dawn of the web.

The film was released in theaters Friday and has also been made available on the Disney+ Premier Access platform, which requires a payment of £19.99 to be added to the monthly subscription fee.

About Cruella

It stars two Oscar-winning actresses, lasts 2; 14 minutes, and reportedly costing $ 200 million, a fair share of it spent on an extensive soundtrack of well-known 60 and 70 pop songs.

However, it never answers the burning question posed by its own existence: What current information could possibly make us feel for the first movie’s nuclear family-disgusting, wannabe-dog-killing monster?

The farther away from “Cruella” that you simply get, the more the connection with “101 Dalmatians” seems like a cynical plan to link an existing Disney property to a story that has no organic reference to it.

Emma Stone stars as the title character, Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mark Strong in supporting roles.

Set in London during the punk movement of the 1970s, the film revolves around Estella, an aspiring seamstress, as she explores the path that will lead her to a notoriously up-and-coming seamstress referred to as Cruella de Vil.

The development of the film in 2013, Andrew Gunn as producer announced Walt Disney Pictures.

Stone was cast in 2016 and is also an executive producer on the film alongside Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the previous live-action adaptations, 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000).

The main photography took place from August and November 2019 in England.

Cruella premiered in LA on May 18, 2021, the most significant major red carpet event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and was released theatrically in US and available simultaneously on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28.

Critics praise the film for Gillespie’s direction, performances (particularly Stone, Thompson and Hauser), costume design and soundtrack, but criticize the screenplay.

‘Cruella’, a film that recoils from its own premise, when it is great to do it.

What is the plot of ‘Cruella’?

Directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt and Kristin Burr, ‘Cruella’ follows the character of Cruella de Vil, who first appeared in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel ‘The Hundred and One Dalmatians’ and Disney’s animated adaptation in 1961.

Cruella, played by Emma Stone, is the play’s villain in the previous installments of the franchise. ‘Cruella’ follows her biography and her attempts to get revenge on Baroness von Hellman.

Cruella teams up with thieves Jasper and Horace, and Artie joins them in her latest plan to destroy the Baroness’ charity ball.

‘Cruella’ received an 88/100 rating by Johnny Oleksinski of the NY Post. “The movie is so sexy and funky and punk, you already forget that Mickey logo and Cinderella’s cute castle,” he said.

USA Today’s Brian Truitt also gave the film a rating of 88. “None of this works without it [Emma] Stone,” he admitted.

IGN’s Kirsty Puchko gave ‘Cruella’ a rating of 70. “Cruella’s gonzo fashions, complicated characters, and truly insane backstory are shaped by commitments to be kid-friendly,” she said.

What do the credit scenes mean?

During the top credits, ‘Cruella’ provides insight into the story of the first ‘One Hundred and One Dalmatians’, with Anita and Roger receiving packages at home.

Each package may contain a Dalmatian puppy, with the notes suggesting that they were actually donated by Cruella herself.

Emma Stone vs. Glenn Close: who is that better Cruella?

Both Stone and Thompson want to return to the wonderful world with a second part. While chatting with Rotten Tomatoes, it was suggested that the Oscar-winning couple would make a Godfather II-style sequel with Close. They immediately agreed, Thompson even said she would write the movie and Stone said she would go on board. Thompson cheerfully replied:

‘I’m writing the letter now. Does anyone actually have paper? ‘Dear Mr. Disney…’ Oh, is he still there? I do not even know. Can we please do exactly what was just suggested during this interview? I’ll send it. Oh my God… That’s a really good one – okay!”

Both leading Emmas lit up at the prospect, while Stone said she had signed on to everything Thompson wrote. Meanwhile, Close had previously put forward her own idea for a sequel starring Cruella. Before the new blockbuster came out, the acclaimed actress said she wants to prowl the streets of NYC in her trusty black and white wig. Although she remained secretive about the concept, she said that Cruella was hiding underground in the sewers.

Either way, hungry Disney fans are already craving more of the bad seamstress. Cruella ends up with Estella turning permanently into Cruella de Vil, thus stopping 101 Dalmatians. While a sequel has not been announced by Disney, the mostly positive critical and audience reception makes it likely that the big mouse will seize another chance to dominate the box office. However, the plot can follow different routes.

While enough time has passed that Disney could recreate 101 Dalmatians with their Cruella cast, it can be hard to top the live-action original. On the other hand, the Godfather-II approach would basically be a mashup of a prequel and a sequel, showing both Stone and Shut in the role. this could turn into an epic thanks to uniting viewers from all over the Dalmatians fandom and even giving Close the Oscar she deserved to win for the role in the first place.

Why Glenn Close is mentioned in Cruella 2021

While not a direct prequel or spin-off, Cruella is clearly intended to be the start of a franchise and makes up the universe of 101 Dalmatians. Cruella completes Estella’s Joker-esque transformation into Cruella de Vil, leaving the door wide open for the next chapter. Here is all the knowledge available so far about Cruella 2 .

Cruella 2 could remake/reboot 101 Dalmatians from Cruella’s perspective. Or it could be the weather introduced in the first movie telling another original story about Cruella and her henchmen that further confirms De Vil’s hatred of Dalmatians. Meanwhile, Emma Stone and Emma Thompon also suggested that their concept of Cruella 2 could be an example of The Godfather Part II as a combined prequel / sequel that jumps back and forth from the Baroness’ origins and Cruella’s new adventure.
